SOLIDARITY IN VIGAN CITY

Image result for vigan city solidarity celebration 2019Every September 8, Vigan and other cities all over the world that have world heritage sites celebrates World Heritage Cities Solidarity Day.

It is the city's way to help preserve the union of the UNESCO-listed World Heritage Cities (OWHC) established on September 8,1993.

This celebration is actually commemorated with week-long festivities aimed at strengthening pride in the history and culture of Vigan.

Visitors can start their Vigan Heritage Solidaruty festivities with the Repazzo de Vigan. This  is a parade that is partiicipated in by al 39 barangays, specially the students and members of non-government organizations.

The participants dramatize the Biguenos way of life from Spanish time up to the period after WWII while they walk through the designated parade route, accompanied by music.

A one-day celebration is not enough to showcase the heritage of the city, so the city government  made the whole month of September as World Heritage Cities Solidarity Cultural Festival.

This year, Ilocano culture will be celebrated through competitions among the youth and elderlies in vocal chorus, vocal solo, photography, stage play, spoken poetry, speech choir, story telling, cultural quiz bowl, folk dance, local debate and solidarity games and the exhibit of local products and food.

Preserving the Ilocano Culture includes bringing to life the history of the city. This will be done through a stage play on the life of a Philippine hero born in Vigan City father Jose Burgos; review of Vigan hitory called Repazzo de Vigan parade of floats; retelling the city's history to the youth by elderly Biguenos called historia oral.
